Ever Changing, Ever Growing: Remembering South Broadway
Event box
In-Person
The South Broadway was one of Albuquerque's first African American neighborhoods. Though it was not exclusively African American, it became known as an African American enclave due to citywide restricted covenants that segregated Black people from most Albuquerque neighborhoods. The South Broadway project was created to tell part of the story about race in Albuquerque through archival research and a digital project.
Dr. Natasha Howard, a professor in Geography and Africana Studies at the University of New Mexico, will discuss her book project on race in New Mexico and a digital project that focuses on the history of South Broadway. The digital project was a collaboration between Dr. Howard and UNM students in the School of Architecture and the Department of Cinematic Arts. Both the book and digital project draw heavily on materials from the Special Collections.
