We all want to do our best in providing a wonderful home for our turtle and tortoise pets. Understanding how they live in the wild - their habitat, social connections, and diet - can help us develop the best standards for care. We will explore this with examples of commonly kept species, such as the Western Box Turtle, the Russian Tortoise, and the Sulcata Tortoise.

Sandy Barnett had a 28-yr career as a zoo keeper, over half as Senior Herpetologist at the National Aquarium in Baltimore. She has over twenty years’ experience as a turtle rehabilitator, and is active in the international conservation of box turtles through the North American Box Turtle Conservation Committee.
