A clandestine group of hooded nightriders declaring themselves defenders of all people and champions of the poor operated in the Las Vegas, New Mexico, area from 1889 to 1891. Las Gorras Blancas grew out of years of economic expansion thanks to landgrabbers, speculators, and squatters. Opinions vary about the motives of these white caps.
