This workshop's mission is to raise awareness of Indigenous traditional mathematics knowledge within the culture.  Participants will be able to understand the relationship between the cosmos and the natural order by using the natural phenomena of sunlight shining into a Navajo hogan dwelling.  Sunlight in a hogan reveals geometric shapes that, according to the Navajo, indicate the beginning of time.  Many will leave with the knowledge to recognize the significance of Navajo math's ethnomathematics, which is essential to their way of life.

Dr. Henry Fowler is the co-founder of Navajo Math Circles and his research interestes lie in ethnomathematics and Navajo education.  Navajo Math Circles provides teachers with workshops for grades K-12 and works with over 40 mathematicians to promote math education for students of the Navajo Nation.  Fowler strongly supports relevant cultural materials that guide instruction, math literacy, and advocating for social justice through mathematics
