Cherry Hills Library's 3rd annual Chalk Art Contest -- Bigger and better than ever! All ages may participate, but we are looking for a completed piece of art that fills up a full square of sidewalk. Color our world with your artwork all summer long!

Individuals (13 and up) or groups/families may sign up but space is limited. Guest judges will announce the winners for each category and award some awesome prizes!

Contest begins at 9:00 AM on Saturday, May 31. Participants have three hours (12noon). Judging will immediately follow and prizes will be awarded! Sign in on the lawn south of the library building.  Please read the details and begin your registration below.

DETAILS: Chalk Art Contest on Saturday, May 31

Artists

  • Begins outside at 9 am!
  • Only registered participants may enter. Registration is only available May 1- May 30
  • Art square spaces will be assigned at registration by Cherry Hills staff.
  • Artists should be finished by 12 pm on Saturday for Judging.
  • Artists must be 13 years or older to participate as an individual, but may participate with friends/family.

Supplies

  • Up to two 12 ct box of Pastel Chalk will be provided for Adult, Youth & Family/Team Artists registered.
  • If you need additional colors, you may share or exchange chalk with other artists.
  • You may also purchase or use your own chalk but it MUST be water-based.
  • We ask that you return unused chalk to the Artist Check-in when completed.

ART & ARTIST RULES

  • The event will go on rain or shine. The artists are responsible for protecting their chalk art. Plastic drapes, tape, tents, or canopies can be used as needed.
  • Chalk art is only to be produced in designated and assigned areas.
  • The art created must be suitable for public and family viewing (no nude or lewd work).
  • No words, symbols, or caricatures intended as political statements may appear within the art.
  • Art created must be culturally sensitive and appropriate, respecting the diversity promoted in our program.
  • Chalk art depicting or intended as an advertisement for a business, product, or service is not allowed.
  • No banners, products, samples, or promotional brochures are allowed. Professional artists may hand out business cards 😊
  • Cherry Hills Library reserves the right to refuse, stop or eliminate objectionable art or art not consistent with rules.
  • Please try to keep your supplies to a minimum and well contained in your space.
  • No open music is allowed. You may wear headphones or listen to the music provided by the library.
  • No pets, please!
  • Your chalk art must only include chalk. Any non-chalk props or items used in the artwork will exclude art from judging. No business advertisements in the form of brochures or signage will be allowed in the main categories.
  • No smoking allowed within 30 feet of library property. Artists using vapes, cigarettes, or otherwise will be excluded from judging.

SUGGESTED SUPPLIES

  • H2O. Keep hydrated and pack snacks if you need them! Keep open beverage containers away from paintings. Water fountains are available to refill water bottles inside the library.
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, or a hat for sun exposure.
  • Wisk broom or brush for cleaning the drawing surface. Do not blow the dust particles.
  • A 2’ x 2’ piece of heavy fabric, carpet square, or cardboard to sit or stand on to avoid smearing your work.
  • A soft towel, gardener’s pad, or knee pad to kneel on.
  • A chalkboard eraser, foam, terry cloth, or shortcut brushes for blending large areas of color.
  • Water and a cloth or sponge to erase unwanted parts of your design.
  • Old towels or rags to clean up as necessary.
  • Masking tape for creating sharp borders, geometry. Tape must be removed when finished.
  • Additional chalk, if you need a lot of a certain color. Must supply your own unless another participant is willing to share their color.
  • Cotton, Latex, or Nitrile gloves to protect your fingertips and assist in blending colors.
  • No glass allowed.
  • Camera to take photos of your creation!
