In-Person
In the years following WW I, a clandestine and little understood resistance movement operating under the name of la mano negra (the black hand) developed in the northern New Mexico communities of the Tierra Amarilla Land Grant. Writer, researcher, and former New Mexico State Historian Robert J. Torrez will explore what the public record can tell us about the ‘black hand’ and how this clandestine organization attempted to stem the fencing of and loss of access to communal lands in the land grant through the middle of the twentieth century.
