Come explore New Mexico history with ¡COLORES! double feature! This is a free event celebrating National Poetry Month.

Summon the Fire: Celebrate the power of the spoken word through slam poetry readings. Watch a judged competition in which the audiences applause and cheering helps determine the winner. When you get up on stage you need to summon the fire, says Matthew Conley, Slam team captain. In bars, community centers, wherever a venue can be made, Slam Poetry expands upon the tradition of Beat and open mic poetry. Raw and spontaneous, slam poetry approaches the point where poetry and drama meet bringing new meaning to the art of poetry.

My Words Are My Power: This documentary features the unheard voices of teens from across New Mexico. Bombarded with adult themes and violence in todays media, these teens find a positive way to express themselves. Seeking to be heard, they choose to express themselves through the power of words. Poetry for them is a powerful tool for building self-esteem and an act of self-discovery. Each poet will read their original poetry along the theme of My Words are My Power.
