Route 66 ran 2400 miles from the Great Lakes to the Pacific Ocean. With car ownership tripling in the 1920’s from 8 to 23 million, 66 slashed the driving distance from Chicago to Los Angeles by 200 miles. The New Deal paved 66 and the Interstate Highway System doomed it but the rich history keeps it alive. Readings are from Tucumcari Tonight and The Grapes of Wrath.
