Making Change - Confinement in the Land of Enchantment
Event box
In-Person
On February 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, authorizing the removal and incarceration of all people of Japanese ancestry from the West Coast. That date is commemorated by the Japanese American community as a Day of Remembrance.
This year's Day of Remembrance play, Confinement in the Land of Enchantment, presents people, places and events close to home -- stories of the prison camps of Lordsburg and Santa Fe. In Lordsburg, a long-neglected diary written in Japanese by an internee describes a notorious shooting of two elderly prisoners by a young guard. People who are still residents of Santa Fe share their childhood remembrances of the Santa Fe Internment Camp. Memories of fear and panic combine with ones of kindness and courage. In the neighborhood of Casa Solano, where the Santa Fe Camp once stood, one observer noted that the soil is “still rich, very rich” because of the remarkable gardening skills of the men who were imprisoned there.
