Although most people may think of Albuquerque's film history in terms of Breaking Bad, the city has been hosting filmmakers since the earliest days of statehood in 1912. The early ‘70s saw a number of films made in Duke City including great works as The Man Who Fell to Earth, with David Bowie and Convoy, directed by the immortal Sam Peckinpah, but there were a lot of lesser known movies that at least briefly called Albuquerque 'home', including the O.J. Simpson epic, Detour to Terror, Bette Davis and Ernest Borgnine's not-quite-masterpiece Bunny O'Hare, and who could forget (or remember) Animal Behavior, which was shot on the UNM campus.

Local film historian, journalist and author of New Mexico Filmmaking (now in its 2nd printing!), Jeff Berg offers a new installment of his “Made in New Mexico” film screenings/lectures, taking viewers on a trip back in time to learn the history of filmmaking in ABQ.

This 90-minute cinematic event will feature the silent short film The Tourists, shot in and around Albuquerque in 1912.  Berg will include clips from many other films lensed in the Duke City—including 1943’s Kirtland base-shot war drama Bombardier, a 1940 fashion show documentary called Fashion Horizons, and the superb Lonely are the Brave. Berg will also discuss his research on the 1933 feature Air Hostess, which may have been filmed in part at the old Albuquerque Airport.

Audience participation is highly encouraged for this screening!
