Ever Changing, Ever Growing - A New Look at Old Gus: The Gustave Baumann Archive Returns to New Mexico
Event box
Last year, more than 30 boxes of records documenting the life and times of artist Gustave Baumann arrived at The New Mexico History Museum. A bequest of the Ann Baumann Trust, it contains correspondence, print and sales records, handwritten notes, scrapbooks, color palettes, woodblocks, photographs, and ephemera. Once catalogued, the archive will be distributed between the Fray Angélico Chávez History Library, the Palace of the Governors Photo Archives, and the History Museum collections. This talk will highlight some of the gems and surprises found in the collection.
From 2001 through 2021, presenter Tom Leech was a curator at the New Mexico History Museum. He received the 2013 Santa Fe Mayor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts, the 2014 Carl Hertzog Award for Excellence in Book Design, and the 2015 Edgar Lee Hewett Award. Under his direction the Press at the Palace of the Governors published Gustave Baumann’s Santa Fe, Indian Pottery Old and New, and most recently, Gustave Baumann’s Book of the Saints. Tom also authored an essay in the 2019 Gustave Baumann Catalogue Raisonné, published by Rizzoli Electa.
